Sun Care in Japan - New Market Research Report

Value sales of sun care increased by 3% in 2013. In addition to the fact that it has become more common to use sun protection daily, the renewal of classification in the industry stimulated the market of sun protection in 2013. The level of sun protection is normally classified both by SPF (Sun Protection Factor or Protection from UVB) and by PA (Protection Grade of UVA) in the Japanese market. Whilst the SPF rating measures the level of preventing sunburn from UVB radiation and the upper limit is 50+, the PA rating measures not only the level sunburn prevention from UVA radiation but also the level of preventing wrinkles and sag. In 2013, the classification of PA was renewed. Whilst the upper limit of PA used to be PA+++, it was raised to PA++++. This renewal enabled products that had the level of PA++++ but needed to claim PA+++ to distinguish themselves from other PA+++ products. Besides, following the renewal, manufacturers reinforced their R&D activities and launched new products with PA++++ in 2013. Many brands introduced products with PA++++, exemplified by Anessa Perfect SPF50+/PA++++ by Shiseido and Allie Extra UV Gel SPF50+/PA++++ by Kanebo.

Competitive Landscape

Shiseido maintained its leading position in sun care with a 21% value share in 2013, slightly increasing its share. The company's sales were strongly supported by its top-selling brand Anessa. Following the new classification, the company introduced products having effects of SPF 50+ and PA++++ under Anessa Perfect series in February 2013. These products are considered the most effective sun protection, thus the brand gained higher attention from consumers.

Industry Prospects

Value sales of sun care are expected to grow at a 2% CAGR (at constant 2013 prices) over the forecast period. Strong growth is expected from sun protection, whilst negative growth is predicted for after sun and self-tanning. Aspiration for fair skin without freckles is expected to continue especially amongst women. With global warming and stronger UVs being covered in the media more often, consumer awareness towards UVs and sun protection is likely to rise over the forecast period.
