After a 3.6% increase in the number of births in 2012 in Hungary, the growth turned negative for 2013, resulting in a 3% drop. Government policies resulted in family-orientated regulations and the introduction of increasing bureaucracy related to abortion. During 2011, the number of births was 2.6% lower than in 2010, resulting in a decline in sales of childrenswear, especially toddler wear. The annual changes in the birth-rates do not necessarily translate to clear rises or falls in the category, as in general, parents became used to limiting their spending on baby wear, by buying second-hand products or using hand-me-down clothes from other children in the family.

Competitive Landscape

In a very fragmented category, Tesco's F&F private label held a 25% value share in 2013, followed by Brendon with an 11% share. Tesco has a stronger position in apparel, while Brendon has a wider product range within non-apparel.
