Smokeless tobacco is a very small category in South Africa, with the bulk of sales consisting of dry snuff. Snuff is considered the cheapest means of consuming tobacco and is often used as an integral part of traditional customs. The majority of users are black females who use nasal snuff traditionally. They tend to purchase tobacco leaf (either whole or loose) and make their own snuff. Dry snuff includes the Magnet and Topmill brands. Information from trade sources also indicates that the number of adolescents experimenting with smokeless tobacco is gradually increasing.

Competitive Landscape

Leonard Dingler Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philip Morris International, dominated smokeless tobacco in 2013 with a volume share of 86%. Philip Morris International acquired Swedish Match South Africa (Pty) Ltd in September 2009, and this deal included Leonard Dingler, which was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Swedish Match. Its brands include Taxi and Magnet. MLP Distributors ranked second with a 3% share through its Ntsu brand while Swedish Match South Africa (Proprietary) ranked third with 2% through its Barbeton brand.
