Competitive Landscape

Tesco Stores was the clear leader of childrenswear in 2013 with a value share of 20%, thanks to its offer of a wide product portfolio of children’s clothes, and a wide range of outlets across the country, which makes their products more available to consumers, often offering discounts and cheap clothes that average-earning consumers can afford. However, the company lost marginal value share in 2013 due to growing consumer interest in higher quality childrenswear.

Industry Prospects

Childrenswear is not predicted to record a significantly better performance over the forecast period as the birth rate is not likely to rise. However, volume sales may accelerate slightly to record a CAGR of 1% over the forecast period. Value sales at constant 2013 prices will not improve as the strong competition and frequent discounts will lead to a CAGR of only 1% during the forecast period.
