Travel retail continued to deliver rapid growth in 2013, with a 6% increase in value. This represents, however, a significant slowdown from the 8% value growth experienced in 2012 and the 11% value growth of 2011. Travel retail remains strong, but is in the process of slowing down in growth as consumers become more accustomed to booking directly with airlines and accommodation providers themselves, a trend that has led to growth in travel retail leisure sales also slowing from 8% value growth in 2012 down to 6% in 2013. Corporate business sales have also slowed, with value growth of 4% in 2013, as the mining boom fades and government travel is cut in an attempt to find fiscal savings.

Industry Prospects

Travel retail has performed well in recent years, with much of this growth coming from the "empty-nester" demographic who, now that their children have left home, have both the time and funds to engage in outbound travel. This demographic is particularly fond of cruises, package tours and other products that are commonly sold through travel agents, specifically offline "bricks-and-mortar" travel agents. However, the "empty-nester" demographic has reached its peak in Australia, suggesting that growth will be much slower over the forecast period. The strength of offline travel retail, despite the migration to online travel retail, has largely been due to the growth in travel, particularly outbound travel, as a whole. With outbound travel likely to slow over the forecast period, and with the growth in the number of "empty-nesters" slowing, such good fortune will come to an end. Travel retail is hence anticipated to experience a value CAGR of 2% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period, down from the 8% value CAGR experienced between 2008 and 2013
