Market Report, "Cafes/Bars in Canada", published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Nov 04 2014

In 2013, cafés/bars grew by 3% in current value sales terms to reach C$5.1 billion. Growth slowed due to the maturity of this foodservice type and strong competition among chains. All types posted foodservice value sales growth in 2013. Chained juice/smoothie bars posted the fastest growth, while cafés and specialist coffee shops saw slower growth compared to 2012. The number of outlets overall increased by 2% to reach 8,700 establishments. Outlet growth in 2013 was faster than in 2012, as juice/smoothie bars and chained specialist coffee shops continued their expansion.

Competitive Landscape

Starbucks Coffee Canada is the leading player with an 18% share of foodservice value sales in 2013 to reach C$900 million. Starbucks’s massive outlet presence in Canada increased further in 2013 to reach 1,300. The company is a strong leader in specialist coffee shops, in terms of transactions, value sales and outlets. Starbucks continuously aims to expand its market presence. It is strategically positioned with Keurig in fresh ground coffee pods and introduced blond roast coffee.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, cafés/bars is projected to post a 2% CAGR in terms of value sales at constant 2013 prices to reach C$5.6 billion. However, both transactions and the number of outlets are set to grow by less than a 1% CAGR. More lenient legislation, similar to that implemented in Manitoba in 2013, can only brighten the outlook for cafés/bars. Although this only applies to bars/pubs requiring licenses to operate, Cafés might find that legislative change makes it viable to extend their offer to include alcoholic drinks. This concept has not taken-off in Canada, and many operators who have tried to introduce it have struggled. However, consumer behaviour is always changing and adapting to new concepts, so it might become a viable area of growth in the forecast period.
