New Report Available: Spectacles in South Africa

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Nov 12 2014

Spectacle frame choice continued to be influenced by product price despite sunglasses brand choice being driven by fashion trends. Spectacle lens and frames purchase decisions are usually driven by recommendations from optometrists and such decisions are often not planned for, whereas sunglasses are bought as a luxury which can be done away with. This was highly evident in the 6% growth recorded from sunglasses sales whilst the other categories posted lower growth which was in line with overall category growth of 5%.

Competitive Landscape

Luxottica South Africa continued to lead spectacles during 2013 with a 20% value share. The company’s success was driven by wider brand coverage across the various avenues that make up the spectacles category. Luxottica led in terms of value share in categories that include sunglasses, spectacle frames and readymade reading glasses. Some of the brands that led the share for Luxottica included Oakley, Ray Ban and many other international brands affiliated to Luxottica South Africa.
