Household mobile phone penetration is highly mature in Chile, and with smartphone penetration reaching 110% in 2014, Chile has one of the highest mobile phone penetration rates in Latin America. As almost everybody possesses already a mobile phone, retail volume sales have decreased. However, current value sales continue to rise. The shift to smartphones, which have higher prices than feature phones, explains the opposite trends of retail volume sales and value sales. The average unit price of mobile phones is expected to continue rising in 2014 with an increase of 15% in current terms due to the shift towards more advanced phones, although the average unit price of feature phones and mobile phones taken separately decreased slightly.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung Electronics Chile was the leading player in feature phones with a 47% retail volume share in 2013. The company benefited from its high brand recognition. Although it decreased the number of feature phones sold by 35% over 2012-2013, it increased its share by four percentage points due to the general decline of feature phones. Samsung’s closest challenger, Nokia Chile, held a 21% retail volume share.

Over the forecast period the mobile phones category is predicted to post a -4% CAGR in retail volume terms. Already high penetration rates of mobile phones in Chile explain this trend.
