Recent Study: Spectacles in Brazil

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Nov 17 2014

Growth in spectacles is set to accelerate slightly during 2014 in spite of falling disposable income levels due the accelerating inflation. Rising inflation rates have not yet substantially compromised demand for spectacles, although it is reasonable to expect major changes in consumer behaviour during the forecast period as Brazilian consumers will at some point inevitably realise that their disposable income levels are declining.

Competitive Landscape

Essilor remained the leading player in spectacles in 2013 with a 19% value share. Although the company recorded positive growth during 2013, it was by no means the strongest company in the category. The highest increase in value sales in spectacles in 2013 was recorded by Grupo Tecnol, which belongs to Luxottica at GBO level. Following its acquisition by Luxottica, Grupo Tecnol has been able to invest in its production processes, increasing product efficiency and output.

Industry Prospects

It is expected that spectacles will increase in value at a CAGR of 3% in constant 2014 terms over the forecast period. This positive growth trend is set to be mainly due to rising demand among low-income consumers as value-added spectacles were unaffordable for the majority of these consumers until the middle of the review period. Thus, low-income Brazilians are steadily moving away from cheaper products towards value-added items, with some even moving away from unbranded and counterfeit brand products sold through informal channels such unlicensed kiosks towards regulated and licensed retail channels.
