New Market Research Report: Cigars in Indonesia

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Nov 19 2014

Cigars in Indonesia are status symbols; they are mostly consumed by middle- and upper-income smokers due to their high prices compared with cigarettes. Brought by the Dutch, cigar smoking is slowly gaining a consumer base not only from foreigners, such as expatriates in Indonesia, but also the locals. Local manufacturers of cigars have seized the opportunity of growing tourism, particularly in Bali, and have distributed their products in tourist areas. Perkebunan Nasional X PT’s cigars are selling well in Bali as a result of the products’ name incorporating Bali (Bali Legong and Bali Djanger).

Competitive Landscape

The domestic cigar manufactures listed are Perkebunan Nusantara X PT (commonly refer to PTPN X), Taru Martani PT, Djarum PT and Wismilak Inti Makmur Tbk PT. The four companies held a combined volume share of 73% of cigars in 2013, declining from 2012’s share of 75%. Perkebunan Nasional X PT ranked first with a 33% share, followed by Taru Martani PT with 23%, then Djarum PT and Wismilak Inti Makmur Tbk PT with a share of 16% and 1% respectively.

Industry Prospects

Cigars and cigarillos are expected to record stabile growth with volume a CAGR of 6% and value CAGR of 7%. Interest in cigars and the consumer base is to grow positively at a slow pace as a result of cigar promotion events seen during the review period. Domestic cigars serve the older generation of smokers and imported ones are limited to middle- and high-income consumers, particularly middle-aged smokers. Cigarillos, however, are not expected to gain a consumer base in the forecast period as the category is highly threatened by ‘kretek’ cigarettes. In the price-sensitive environment in Indonesia, cigarillos continue to fail to attract consumers as they are priced higher than cigarettes.
