In-dash media players in the US is a tale of two categories, with in-dash audio players doing quite poorly despite in-dash video players doing quite well. In-dash audio players retail volume sales are expected to fall by 3% in 2014 after a particularly bad review period decline at a unit CAGR of 5%. In-dash video players, on the other hand, will see flat unit growth in 2014 after sustaining a 4% CAGR decline in unit sales over the review period. In-dash media player purchases are typically not cheap in the US, so the consumer’s decision to upgrade is based on the best possible units available, which include video. These systems are not only easier to read and control, but are convergent with trends across consumer electronics, enabling intuitive use via touchscreens and easier content consumption via video.
Industry Prospects
For the totality of in-car entertainment in the US, retail volume sales are expected to experience decline by a CAGR of 8% in the forecast period, slightly worse than the decline seen in the review period at a CAGR of 7%. High prices, the growing obsolescence of in-car navigation and the growing importance of OEM support for built-in navigation and in-dash media players will all put more downward pressure on in-car entertainment which is increasingly largely seen as superfluous. This is a particularly painful trend, as upper- and middle-income consumer groups are beginning to expect their new cars to come bundled with state-of-the-art technology, which often means in-dash media players and in-car navigation.
