The late massification of smartphones in Colombia compared with other countries in the region (eg Venezuela) allowed sales of imaging devices to remain active until 2011. In 2012 and onwards, the boom of smartphones left fixed lens cameras in a difficult position, against more convenient and portable smartphones. However, despite the smartphones boom, Colombians still rely on imaging devices, even with increasing penetration of mid- and low-end smartphones with cameras which offer lower image or video quality than the cheaper digital cameras or camcorders available. Carrying just one device at hand and sharing pictures on the go are very attractive benefits for consumers and this is punching sales of cameras which are trying to be more interactive in sharing pictures to social networks, which is one of the most important advantages of smartphones, rather than image quality. However, cameras, such as Samsung’s Galaxy with the Android operating system, still need to be connected to a wireless network to share images on a real-time basis. The massification of smartphones has implied deep unit price plunges to fixed lens cameras which are more prone to be substituted than SLR cameras, whose capabilities are harder to match with smartphones. SLR cameras prevented further overall unit price declines of the imaging devices category. Manufacturers like Olympus with its Tough device are heading towards action imaging devices to meet the needs of sports and outdoor enthusiasts, similar to what is happening in portable media players.

Industry Prospects

Imaging devices in Colombia is expected to see a 19% retail volume CAGR decline in sales over the forecast period. It is expected to concentrate its volume sales in higher-end and more specialised SLR and compact system cameras as well as advanced 3D/HD camcorders. With a lower volume of lower-end digital cameras and camcorders, and the migration of digital imaging to become a niche category for sports fans (action cameras) and serious photography enthusiasts, declining overall imaging devices sales at constant 2013 prices are expected to be cushioned to a 17% CAGR over the forecast period.
