New market study, "Street Stalls/Kiosks in Portugal", has been published

Street stalls/kiosks value sales experienced a decrease of nearly 10%, to reach €118 million in 2013, driven by the drop in coffee sales due to the general ban on smoking in closed areas and the decrease in traffic in shopping centres. In addition, the new VAT rate on all consumer foodservice categories came into force in 2012, strongly impacting street stalls/kiosks value sales. Even if street stalls/kiosks offered lower prices, simpler menus and the food was affordable to consumers of all income groups, Portuguese consumers started to change their habits, favouring having a coffee at home.

Competitive Landscape

Chained street stalls/kiosks have been gaining share over the review period, amounting to €16 million in 2013. Chained operators, which own well-established coffee brands in Portugal, started to develop their kiosk networks in order to sell their coffee products in strategic locations, such as shopping centres and busy travel locations. However, high rents, as well as the fast-growing appeal of high streets over shopping centres after the economic turmoil, negatively affected the expansion plans of most chained operators. As a result, independents continued to dominate street stalls/kiosks with an 87% value share in 2013, following an 11% decline in current value sales.

Industry Prospects

Street stalls/kiosks is expected to register static value growth over the forecast period, to reach €118 in 2018. Although the first signs of the economic recovery were visible at the last half of 2013, an increase in the flow of consumers to main shopping areas, where many street stalls/kiosks are located, is only expected in the second half of 2014. This is exacerbated by a certain degree of saturation of street stalls/kiosks, leaving only big players competing, while independent stalls might narrow their range and become fewer, unless positioned in high traffic locations or enjoy a local reputation.
