The landscape of in-car entertainment underwent a dramatic transformation over recent years, as the recession took a severe toll on sales of cars, which touched a historic low in 2013, with 59,000 new cars sold, compared with sales of 280,000 in pre-crisis Greece in 2008. Given this steep dive in sales towards 2013, 2014 was a year of relative stabilisation for the auto industry; however, sales of in-car entertainment kept declining, falling by an additional 11% in retail volume terms. In terms of products, the key trend in 2014 for in-dash audio players, the biggest single category within in-car entertainment, was mechless car stereos (radio-USB), which are constantly gaining ground over CD players, as new consumers use their smartphones or USB sticks to listen to music, rather than CDs.

Industry Prospects

In-car entertainment is set to see a negative retail volume CAGR of 5% and a negative value CAGR of 9% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period. With the exception of in-car navigation, it is expected that all in-car entertainment categories have already put their worst years behind them in Greece, and, following the stability of car sales, in-car entertainment is set to remain relatively stable in volume terms. The bottom has been reached, and in fact there may even be growth in some categories towards the second half of the forecast period.
