2014 is expected to have been another disastrous year for in-car navigation in France, mainly due to the massive shift among consumers to connected alternative navigation options such as the various satellite navigation applications which are available for the most popular smartphones and tablets. The adoption of free navigation applications such as Orange Maps, MappyGPS Free and NavFree are rendering in-car navigation devices largely redundant. Only 20% of vehicles in France were equipped with an aftermarket navigation system at the end of the review period, while 48% had factory fitted in-built satellite navigation systems. The drivers of the remaining 32% pf vehicles resorted to using applications on their smartphones and tablets for in-car navigation purposes.

Industry Prospects

The outlook for in-car entertainment over the forecast period is set to be less than outstanding, with volume sales set to decline at a CAGR of -13%. With the exception of in-car speakers, all in-car entertainment categories are expected to continue declining in volume throughout the forecast period. The leading manufacturers in the category are increasingly focusing their strategies on the business-to-business aspects of their operations, collaborating with automotive manufacturers to design and manufacture in-built devices which are factory fitted into new cars. The quality of factory-fitted in-car entertainment devices has improved dramatically in recent years and this is expected to continue during the forecast period, reducing demand for aftermarket in-car entertainment devices substantially. Factory fitted built-in in-car entertainment equipment is expected to comprise some 55% of all in-car entertainment devices in use in France by 2018, with alternative options which make use of smartphones and tablets likely to approach 40%.
