"Cafes/Bars in the Czech Republic" Published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Thu Dec 18 2014

The year 2013 was more favourable for cafés/bars than the previous year. With slightly improved purchasing powers of Czech consumers, the number of transactions decreased at slower pace than during 2012. They chose cafés/bars cautiously and looked for establishments that offered good-quality food and drinks in a pleasant environment, but for a reasonable price. Czech consumers like seasonal offers and special promotional deals, and specialist coffee shops and juice/smoothie bars were active in introducing frequent discount offers and seasonal flavours. During 2013, the majority of Czech consumers continued to choose cafés/bars outlets that offered their products at standard prices.

Competitive Landscape

Pivovary Staropramen (operator of the pub chain Potrefena Husa), AmRest Coffee (owner of the Starbucks specialist coffee shop chain) and Plzensky Prazdroj (owner of the four pub chains The Pub, Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant, Gambrinus Image Restaurant and Gambrinus Sedmy Nebe) remained the three leading companies in cafés/bars in 2013. Pivovary Staropramen’s Potrefena Husa chain led chained bars/pubs in value share terms in 2013. The company did not open any new Potrefena Husa outlets during 2013 (compared to opening four new ones in 2012) and the company rather concentrated on improvements in terms of services and its menu. The chain is successful as it offers quality food and drink and excellent services at relatively reasonable prices and it is appreciated by Czech consumers with at least average incomes and by foreign tourists.

Industry Prospects

Cafés/bars is projected to decline at a marginal CAGR at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period, while the number of outlets is set to remain largely static, though the numbers of outlets of specialist coffee shops and juice/smoothie bars are set to rise. The category is set to record value declines at constant 2013 prices in 2014 and 2015, although the overall performance of cafés/bars is to set to improve over the forecast period in comparison to that registered in 2013. Growth at constant 2013 prices is expected during the latter part of the forecast period with an anticipated more-stable financial situation for the majority of Czech households.
