Malaysians who travel overseas during the review period were more cautious in their spending patterns due to lower consumer confidence levels. Although they still chose to travel overseas due to cheap flight tickets provided by low cost carriers, some of them chose to reduce their spending during travel; for instance costs incurred in travel accommodation and transportation. Thus, similar volume growth rates in 2013 for total outbound trips yielded lower value growth of outgoing expenditure in the same year for Malaysia.

Over the forecast period, departures will enjoy a volume CAGR of 3%, while outgoing expenditure is predicted to post a mere 4% value CAGR at constant 2013 prices.
