We favour the grain, livestock and dairy industries in the UK because of good export opportunities and a strong domestic market . The UK will post moderately strong growth in wheat production over the coming years, as we expect the grain to remain attractive in terms of prices relative to other crops. We believe that the dairy and sugar industries will increase production in the years following their respective production quota ends.

Key Forecasts

* Wheat production growth to 2017/18: 19.5% to 1 5.9 mn tonnes. We expect UK wheat production to grow at a moderate pace due in part to wheat price outperformance relative to other grains, and ongoing demand from export destinations. However, there will be increased competition for exports from the Black Sea region, decreasing direct payments to farmers as a result of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, and poor economies of scale on the back of a shift of EU ethanol policy towards non-food biofuels.
* Poultry consumption growth to 2018: 10.7 % to 2.2 mn tonnes. Poultry meat is often viewed as a cheaper and healthier alternative to beef, for which consumption per capita is largely saturated.
* Milk production growth to 2017/18: 6.2 % to 14. 5 mn tonnes. Liquid milk production will post moderate growth over the next few years, before accelerating as effects of the abolition of the 2015 milk production quotas take hold.
* 2015 r eal GDP growth: 2. 4 % year-on-year (y-o-y) (down from 3.1% y-o-y in 2014).
* 2015 consumer price inflation: 1.95 % y-o-y (up from 1.5% y-o-y in 2014).
* BMI U niverse Agribusiness M arket V alue growth : 4.5% y-o-y to USD20.7bn in 2014/15, forecast to rise 2.6% on average annually between 2014/15 and 2017/18.
