According to CONUEE (Comisión Nacional para el Uso Eficiente de Energía, or the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy) which is part of the Ministry of Energy, refrigeration appliances represents 30% of energy consumption in regular homes. Based on this statistic this body launched the campaign "Saving energy, saving money" ("Ahorrar energía, ahorrar dinero") to create general awareness among Mexican consumers to obtain new refrigeration appliances when they are more than 10 years old, even if they are in good condition, because the energy efficiency is not the same – new models could result in 60% lower energy consumption compared with older models. This campaign aims to help consumers replace old refrigeration appliances with new units and encourage them to choose the best option comparing the capacity, functionality and energy efficiency, not only price. Most popular brands such as Mabe, LG, Samsung and Frigidaire among others promote energy efficiency through stickers on the doors of the appliances. Only a few have the official FIDE sticker distributed by Fideicomiso para el Ahorro de Energía Eléctrica (Trust for Saving Electric Energy), an independent trust comprising several organisations. FIDE certifies that the products are really energy savers.
