India's tourism market is expected to show healthy growth across key indicators over the medium term (2015-2019). A relaxation of visa requirements and increase in international flight connections will help to improve accessibility for major inbound source markets while domestic economic growth is supporting robust growth in the larger outbound travel market. As a result of increased travel, we expect to see healthy gains in tourism related expenditure and industry value.

The outbound tourism market from India is substantial and has enormous potential for future growth considering the size of the population. Solid annual GDP growth and increasing wages will boost the spending power of Indian tourists, and many countries are targetting the country as a growth area. Australia is currently trialling a new online visa application system for visitors from India, as part of the Tourism 2020 plans which aims to increase the contribution of tourists from India to between USD1.5bn and USD1.8bn a year. We expect to see steady annual growth in outbound tourism from India, increasing from 13.10mn departure in 2015 to 17.25mn departures in 2019.

Compared to its outbound travel market, India's inbound tourism market is much smaller, with around 7.61mn arrivals expected in 2015, increasing to 9.21mn in 2019. Both the inbound and outbound tourism markets are dominated by India's nearby neighbours in the Asia Pacific region, which can take advantage of the ease and relatively low cost of regional travel. The UK and USA are two major markets outside of the Asia Pacific region. India's tourism market will benefit from the introduction of a visa on arrival system, allowing visitors to obtain a 30 day visa when arriving in India following the completion of an electronic travel authorisation form online. 43 countries are currently included on the scheme, which will eventually be expanded to 109 countries.
