Vacuum cleaners in Japan declined by 1% in volume terms in 2014 due largely to the underperformance of the largest category, cylinder vacuum cleaners, which registered a negative 4% growth in volume terms. Despite the negative growth, cylinder vacuum cleaners accounted for 66% of volume sales in the entire vacuum cleaners category. On the other hand, the new vacuum cleaner formats, such as stick and robotic vacuum cleaners, grew by 15% and 16% respectively in volume terms in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

The vacuum cleaners category in Japan is concentrated and the top four manufacturers, which are all domestic companies, accounted for 67% of volume sales, with Panasonic retaining its lead with 31% in 2014. The two leading companies lost share to foreign companies such as Dyson Appliances, iRobot and Electrolux, all of which increased their presence in 2014. Consumers gradually shifted away from conventional cylinder vacuum cleaners and migrated to new vacuum cleaner formats such as robotic vacuum cleaners and stick vacuum cleaners, of which the foreign companies have an advantage thanks to their expertise and experiences in the product categories.
