Coffee in Ecuador - New Study Released

The government is eager to reduce imports and slowly change Ecuador’s main current production grid (which relies on unprocessed products like petroleum, shrimp and bananas) towards more industrialised and value-added products. This is one of the reasons why in December 2013 the COMEX (External Commerce Committee in Spanish) created the 116 Resolution, which aims to control imported products with additional quality certificates but in reality reduces imports. This helped local production as local producers were able to fill in the gap of the missing product availability left by imported brands like Colcafé and Café Buendía.

Competitive Landscape

Nestlé de Ecuador led sales in 2014, recording a value share of 30%. Nestlé’s advantage is that its Nescafé brand is highly positioned in instant coffee, which accounts for 96% of coffee sales. Nestlé has been able to reach a wide range of consumers thanks to its product variety, various pack sizes, a large distribution network and constant marketing campaigns.

Industry Prospects

During the forecast period, coffee culture is expected to continue expanding all over the country and to smaller cities. This is likely to make consumers demand more new products and varieties in order to maintain growing interest in new options. This is why it is expected that more product variety with more flavours and formats will develop between 2014 and 2019.
