New market study, "Baked Goods in Uruguay", has been published

By the end of 2013 the consecutive price increases in the unpackaged/artisanal bread category resulted in an improvement in the economies of artisanal bakeries, and even the viability of the smaller ones is no longer in doubt. Many of these bakeries have undertaken diversification for their portfolios, adding the manufacturing of artisanal ready meals and pasta and including free home-delivery as a "plus" service. In 2014, profitability is no longer in question and, for the first time in years, the average price of unpackaged/artisanal bread will decline in current terms.

Competitive Landscape

Artisanal bakeries (more than 1,200 countrywide) continue to lead baked goods sales, with combined value shares of 92% and 91% respectively in 2013 and 2014. Among those manufacturing packaged/industrial products, Panificadora Bimbo del Uruguay SA will be the clear leader in 2014 with a 4% share of total value sales, four times that of second-ranked Henderson & Cía SA (Tienda Inglesa). Panificadora Bimbo has an active presence in all categories and in 2014 it will lead bread substitutes (51% value share) and packaged/industrial bread (70%), but so far has only small shares in packaged/industrial cakes and packaged/industrial pastries. Another company of Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, Plucky SA, will rank second in packaged/industrial cakes with a 27% value share behind domestic player Durulte SA (32% share) in 2014.

Industry Prospects

It is not foreseen that the overall retail volume growth rate will improve beyond current levels in 2014-2019, as it will remain dependent on the performance of all the smaller categories, including the packaged/industrial products ones, unpackaged/artisanal cakes and unpackaged/industrial pastries. The trend towards trading up to bread substitutes and packaged/industrial bread and the maturity of unpackaged/artisanal bread will conspire against future volume growth in the last category.
