As internet retailing becomes more established in Germany, value growth rates are slowing down or stabilising for many products. In 2014, more than 80% of the German population used the internet. More than two thirds of the population use broadband internet, which is above the EU average. Products that accounted for only a very low share of the market before can, however, still experience very strong growth. For example, food and drink internet retailing showed strong performance in 2014, as grocery retailers have lagged behind in entering the online space but slowly picked up speed in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Amazon.de GmbH continued to dominate internet retailing in 2014. The company has expanded the range of products on offer enormously since it started off as an online retailer mainly for books to now selling virtually all common and many uncommon or niche product types such as specialist outdoor equipment or wheelchairs. In 2014, it also announced plans to introduce the Amazon Fresh service in Germany, thereby taking the way it operates in groceries to another level. Before this, it did not sell fresh foods, but mainly items such as dehydrated foods, chocolates or other long-lasting products.

Industry Prospects

The trend currently having the biggest impact on internet retailing is m-commerce. Companies are increasingly optimising their online stores for mobile devices or even developing apps offering greater convenience to consumers. In contrast to what the name might suggest, m-commerce also includes transactions consumers make at home and for which they happen to choose a tablet computer or smartphone instead of a laptop. In reality, it is these transactions that account for the largest share within mobile commerce rather than transactions actually made on the go.
