The biggest obstacle to the development of small kitchen appliances (non-cooking) in Venezuela is the resistance of consumers to pay for devices that are considered unnecessary, and whose job can be done manually. For example, this includes: kettles, as water can easily be boiled on the fire; electric kitchen scales, as measuring cups can be used to measure ingredients; electric graters, which are easily replaced by cheap manual graters; and electric can openers, which can be substituted by manual formats, and the use of which is declining anyway, due to the greater availability of easy-open cans.

Competitive Landscape

In 2014 Oster de Venezuela led small kitchen appliances (non-cooking) with a 37% retail volume share. HPG de Venezuela Black & Decker and CorporaciĆ³n Conair de Venezuela, with its brand Cuisinart, followed with shares of 13% and 2% respectively. Although these brands are important, the category is fragmented, as "others" represented a 48% share of volume sales in 2014.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period small kitchen appliances (non-cooking) is anticipated to see a negligible negative CAGR in retail volume terms and a positive value CAGR of 1% at constant 2014 prices. The growth of the category will be hampered by the fact that such products appeal to only a limited group of consumers. In addition, these products are perceived to offer very little extra value in the kitchen. Should consumers be willing to pay extra for convenience in the kitchen, they would be likely to opt for other products, such as small cooking appliances, which can perform more complex tasks.
