New Market Report: Other Hot Drinks in Portugal

The limited purchasing power of Portuguese consumers due to the recession, alongside high unemployment, continued to impact consumer behaviour within other hot drinks. Consumers tried to be cautious with their budgets, and sought to reduce unnecessary spending, particularly in terms of leisure and away-from-home activities, including foodservice visits to bars and restaurants. This strongly negatively impacted the on-trade performance, with sales at breakfast-time suffering in particular, as this is when most hot drinks are consumed in Portugal. Nevertheless, this benefited off-trade sales of other hot drinks, which saw an increase in 2014 due to the shift in consumption to consumers’ homes.

Competitive Landscape

The main player in other hot drinks in Portugal is Nestlé, with its Nesquik brand in chocolate-based flavoured power drinks and its Bolero brand in malt-based hot drinks. Nestlé held a value share of 62% in 2014 thanks a wide portfolio of brands, such as Mokambo, Brasa, Bolero, Nesquik, Pensal and Tofina. Nestlé continued to see its share increase in 2014, due to its strong brand awareness and wide distribution network. In 2014 the company increased its share by two percentage points, mainly coming from chocolate-based flavoured powder drinks.

Industry Prospects

Other hot drinks in Portugal is expected to perform slightly better over the forecast period achieving a CAGR of 1% in value terms at constant 2014 prices, compared to a negative CAGR of 1% in the review period. The main reason for this, besides rising average unit prices, will be the increasing popularity of tea in Portugal. Furthermore, flavoured powder drinks are not seen as a particularly healthy option compared with coffee, which is a basic drink, and tea, which is regarded as the healthiest option of all.
