Coffee is considered a traditional hot beverage in Slovenia and is drunk every day at home, in the workplace and in cafés/bars as a social activity. Its consumption is not affected by the current economic crisis in the country, like many other non-alcoholic drinks, on account of its relatively low price. However, high unemployment and low consumer purchasing power have influenced shopping patterns and many consumers have become highly price-sensitive and look for discounts, special offers, cheaper private label or simply smaller packaging. As such they are decreasing their average shopping expenditure. Furthermore, in order to make some savings, many people are decreasing their number of visits to cafés/bars and turning more towards in-home consumption and thus reinforcing sales of the most popular type of coffee in Slovenia – Turkish coffee.

Competitive Landscape

Despite many manufacturers and products present in Slovenia, coffee sales remain very concentrated among the biggest three players, which contributed 70% of total off-trade value sales in 2014. The dominating position is taken by domestic manufacturer Droga Kolinska dd and its well-established and recognised Barcaffe brand. The company had a 53% value share in 2014, which derived from its long-term presence in the market and its many marketing activities in the year aimed especially at the biggest, fresh ground Turkish coffee category. Because of this, the company managed to record a marginal increase in its value share.

Industry Prospects

Coffee is a mature category in Slovenia and as per capita consumption is already way above Eastern and Western European averages, it is not expected to see any swift growth anymore. However, with the expected recovery in the economy and in consumer purchasing power over the forecast period, the on-trade channel is expected to perform better. It was losing sales in the review period as more people turned to in-home consumption in order to make some savings.
