Spectacles in Indonesia - New Study Released

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.

While some people might wear contact lenses for cosmetic purposes, most tend to wear spectacles for eye-correction purposes. However, fashion trends are also having an influence on spectacles. Consumers’ behaviour in selecting spectacles is becoming more sophisticated. More product varieties were found for both spectacle frames and spectacle lenses in 2014. Positive growth in spectacles is being supported by rising demand for the products, since more consumers are experiencing eye problems through spending more hours working, studying and playing on electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers.

Competitive Landscape

In 2013, Essilor Indonesia PT continued leading spectacles with an 11% value share, thanks to its strong positioning in spectacle lenses, with product offerings catering primarily to middle-upper-income consumers. Essilor also enjoys high brand-awareness in spectacles in Indonesia through its continual innovations or new product developments. In 2013, the company launched Crizal Forte UV with technology to address the five issues that hinder vision in spectacle lenses, namely water, dust, scratching, stains and sunlight. With its broad spectrum technology its lens can absorb UV rays on the back as well as the front. Along with this launch, the company has run its marketing campaign "See the World Clearly Now" from which 10% of sales are donated to children through collaboration with foundations and optical goods stores. As leading player, Essilor employs a wide distribution network including partnerships with leading chained optical goods stores such as Optik Melawai and Optik Seis.

Industry Prospects

The increasing awareness of branded spectacles and eye-health will be a hugely favourable factor for the spectacles category over the forecast period.
