After the acquisition of all Mimatec SA operations by Ta-Ta SA, the two companies kept functioning in the same way as they did before the acquisition. In 2014 however, Ta-Ta SA began to convert Multi Ahorro supermarkets to the Ta-Ta format. Each launch was accompanied by special promotions, raffles and prizes. As of 2014, no Multi Ahorro stores were closed. However, the most significant change in grocery retailing during 2014 was the fast growth of the two chains of convenience stores, Kinko and Frog Maxishop, as they rapidly took the unexploited space between independent small grocers and supermarkets.

Competitive Landscape

Supermarkets and hypermarkets chains continue leading grocery value sales in 2014. Ta-Ta SA, after completing the acquisition of Mimatec SA (Multi Ahorro supermarkets) and Sistemar SA (Multi Ahorro Express), became the largest chain, covering Montevideo and all departamentos (provinces). The company is in the process of unifying all supermarket operations under its own Ta-Ta brand, a task that is expected to be completed in mid-2015. The combined value share of the company’s three chains is 9% of grocery retailers in 2014 (27% of modern grocery retailers value sales) outselling all the other major chains of Tienda Inglesa, Devoto, Disco, Géant and El Dorado.

Industry Prospects

The most important change in grocery retailers was Ta-Ta’s acquisition of all Multi Ahorro operations which consolidates this company as the largest grocery retailer in Uruguay. Although its expansion is expected to slow down during the forecast period, the company already committed its presence in at least two of the new shopping centres projects. The future of the new Kinko and Frog Maxishop convenience stores will be decided in the short term. If they succeed in gaining the preference of consumers in Pocitos and other mid- to high-income neighbourhoods with this new format, they could complete their expansion plans of opening other stores in different areas of Montevideo during the forecast period.
