Noodles is the smallest category in packaged food. Although they have been present in Bulgaria for a while, noodles products have failed to catch on with local consumers. The reasons for this are varied. Noodles do not fit in well with local food traditions and tastes. Furthermore, noodles is normally located in the economy segment of packaged food, relying on its combination of convenience and price to attract customers. In Bulgaria, however, street food and various local prepared food types are sold at a price that easily competes with most noodle products. This results in noodles losing their advantage and becoming little more than an exotic niche offering. Therefore, noodles does not increase enough to attract competition and to warrant investment in consumer awareness.

Competitive Landscape
Choice EOOD once again led noodles with 36% of value sales in 2014. Second was Vibo Trade & Food with a 27% share from value sales, followed by Uni Export – Import EOOD with 9% share. Choice EOOD has long been established as the leader in importing noodles and other exotic foods with Asian origin and, as such, is able to maintain its strong position. Local competitors have been improving slowly, especially in high-growth cups/bowl instant noodles.

Constant value sales will register marginal positive growth in the forecast period, contrasting with the review period CAGR of 2%. Noodles will post a volume CAGR over the forecast period of 3%. Constant value growth is less than that of volume, signalling a clear paradigm for the development of noodles over the next five years. Growth is difficult to achieve outside of its natural limits.
