New market study, "Vending in Japan", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Apr 03 2015

Despite the increase in the number of vending machines, vending sales continued to decline, falling by 2% in 2014. VAT increase from 5% to 8% in April 2014 had a large negative impact on the vending channel. Vending operators selling soft drinks, the largest product category within vending, responded to the VAT increase in two different ways. Some companies raised prices by ¥10, because consumers typically dislike the trouble of paying with many small coins and so the most common pricing on vending machines is rounded up to the nearest multiple of ¥10 rather than changing exactly by ¥1. For example, a 350ml can of carbonated drink previously sold at ¥120 (5% VAT) is now sold at ¥130 instead of ¥123 or ¥124 (8% VAT). Others, afraid that higher prices will put consumers off, kept the prices unchanged. However as a whole, the VAT increase resulted in purchases on vending machines perceived relatively more expensive, causing vending performance to decline in 2014.
