Grocery retailers grew by 2% in current value terms in 2014 to reach NOK190 billion, while the number of outlets declined by 1% to reach 8,163. The growth in value is mainly due to increased unit prices, especially the hike during July, which made a considerable contribution to the growth in value sales. The price index of food and alcohol-free drinks increased by 3.1% from June to July 2014 according to national statistics (SSB). Increased consolidation within the channel is leading to fewer outlets, which is mainly due to a very high number of outlets per capita.

Competitive Landscape

Norgesgruppen ranked first in grocery retailers, with a 34% value share in 2014. The company has long experience in grocery retailing in Norway, and has grown strong due to its knowledge of the local market and high confidence among consumers. This has led to several acquisitions over the years, as smaller companies have often found it necessary to sell out to Norgesgruppen in response to competitive pressures. During 2013/2014 ICA Norge was aiming to cooperate with Norgesgruppen in terms of distribution of groceries, but permission was not granted by the Norwegian Competition Authority. As a result ICA Norge is now being sold to Coop Norge Handel, although it remains to be seen if the Competition Authority will approve this sale. If the acquisition is not approved, then ICA Norge will withdraw from the marketplace.

It is expected that Norwegian consumers' preferences for smaller supermarkets and discounters over hypermarkets will continue during the forecast period, although it is also expected that companies will continue to focus on consolidation and expand the sales area of their retailers.
