Cheese sales in Taiwan were still minimal in 2014, mainly because of the eating habits of the Taiwanese. Most consumers were not totally accepting of the Western-style cheese taste; only a light cheddar cheese taste was commonly accepted. However, cheese was considered to be nutritious and therefore grew by 4% in current value terms in 2014. The sales growth of cheese slowed down due to a lack of marketing efforts by companies to promote new cheese into Taiwan.

Competitive Landscape

Fonterra Brands (New Young) Pte was the largest cheese supplier in Taiwan with 52% value share in 2014. The company provided cheese of New Zealand origin. Taiwan and New Zealand have an economic cooperation agreement which made New Zealand the largest import country of dairy produce to Taiwan. Moreover, New Zealand’s natural and green image also meant that the Taiwanese preferred New Zealand dairy produce. Fonterra Brands also provided sliced cheese and shredded cheese to ensure wider cheese usage at home.
