This opposition is to the ingredient make-up of bleach, which includes sodium hypochlorite. Environmental interest groups claim sodium hypochlorite is poisonous to aquatic life.

Competitive Landscape

Colgate-Palmolive AB continued to dominate bleach and accounted for a retail value share of 83% in 2014. This represents an increase of one percentage point on 2013 results. The company achieved its leading position through its two brands Klorin and Javex – the former is synonymous with bleach in Sweden. The multinational company also has the resources to retain its position, as it is one of the few players that invests in the development of such products.

Industry Prospects

Sales of bleach are expected to further decline over the forecast period. The reason for this is the migration away from products that are harmful to the environment and that only fulfil one function. In addition, bleach is an old-fashioned product that young Swedes do not have an attachment to, or a habit of using. Furthermore, bleach will find itself in direct competition with surface and laundry care products that offer the same function, two categories that have much higher development resources.
