The Egyptian consumer electronics market began to recover in 2014 from c urrency depreciation and a lack of access to credit on favourable terms resulted in a dramatic slowdown in consumer electronics spending in 2013 . We expect the recovery to continue in 2015 and we have a positive medium - term outlook for Egypt's consumer electronics market, with a young population, low device penetration rates, rising incomes and the falling cost of devices to drive growth. We expect government, vendor and operator-led investment in supporting infrastructure such as telecoms networks and retail/distribution networks to further encourage growth and drive accelerating demand for connected devices such as smartphones and tablets. We expect total spending to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 6.8 % 2015 -2018, with total spending expected to rise from USD 3.3 bn in 2014 to USD 4.29 bn in 2018.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer hardware sales: USD907mn in 2014 to USD993bn in 2015, up 9.6% in US dollar terms. Tablets will continue to be the largest device category by volume in 2015, but we also expect growth in notebook and hybrid sales in the retail market.

AV sales: USD663mn in 2014 to USD661mn in 2015, down 0.3% in US dollar terms. The FIFA World Cup in Brazil boosted flat-screen volumes in 2014 by bringing demand forward from 2015, which we expect to result in a slight contraction of market value in 2015.

Handset sales: USD1.73bn in 2014 to USD1.85bn in 2015, increasing 6.5% in US dollar terms. The handset market is expected to decelerate from 2015 in terms of value growth as smartphone market saturation and price erosion begin to limit growth.
