In the same year, 78% of Canadians subscribed to high-speed internet service. Furthermore, 81% of Canadians subscribed to a wireless service, of which 52% used smartphones, tablets and other advanced handheld devices. Competitive Landscape

The Canadian internet retailing landscape is becoming more fragmented as more retailers are entering the space, being domestic or foreign-based. Amazon.com Inc continued to be in the lead, with 29% value share of sales for combined amazon.com and amazon.ca. The company still has a strong reputation in Canada and has been actively supporting its Canadian branch, with amazon.ca adding more products and product categories to its line-up, such as an increased number of beauty care products and groceries. However, while actual sales through Amazon sites remained positive, the share in percentage terms witnessed a decline as more retailers entered the fast growing e-commerce.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, value sales at constant 2014 prices through the internet are expected to continue with healthy growth, with a projected 12% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices to achieve a total of C$12.4 billion in 2019. Increased emphasis by many Canadian and foreign-based retailers on e-commerce across product categories and delivery formats – from direct delivery to click & collect options – along with wider merchandise selection and general acceptance of e-commerce by more consumers, especially the younger generation that grew up with the digital applications, will help support the demand and expansion.
