Newly released market study: Analgesics in Sweden

The Medical Products Agency proposed that all sales of acetaminophen are to be banned effective as of March 2015, citing a greater than usual influx of distressed callers to emergency hotlines who had purportedly overdosed on acetaminophen products. Sales outside of pharmacies represented 36% of all total sales of acetaminophen in 2013. A study conducted by GlaxoSmithKline in 2014 suggested that 71% of all consumers would switch substance and brand instead of switching point-of-purchase (i.e. they would buy some other, similar product, such as ibuprofen, still sold at, for example, the grocery shop instead of making sure to find a pharmacy that sells acetaminophen).

Competitive Landscape

GlaxoSmithKline’s Alvedon brand, a household name in Sweden, fared well, as usual, in 2014. Alvedon maintained its leading position with a 25% value share. Alvedon was followed by Meda AB’s Treo brand that achieved a 16% value share.

Industry Prospects

If the Medical Products Agency decides to go ahead with its pending decision to ban acetaminophen sales outside of pharmacies this will definitely impact the size of acetaminophen in a negative manner and possibly also the relative shares of different brands in the category. 36% of all total sales of acetaminophen in Sweden in 2013 were sold outside of pharmacies. GlaxoSmithKline’s own study suggested that 71% of consumers will switch to a different substance at the point-of-purchase, instead of switching the point-of purchase as such (i.e. consumers will opt for buying a different brand at the supermarket instead of seeking out a pharmacy licensed to sell acetaminophen).
