Report Published: "Baby Food Packaging in South Africa"

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Apr 29 2015

There was growing polarisation in pack sizes in baby food at the end of the review period, with this linked to price-sensitivity as a result of the rising cost of living in South Africa. Larger packs performed well in many areas thanks to offering lower unit prices. Within milk formula, 500g packs notably gained share from 400g packs, with retail volume growth of 2% and 15% respectively. 1,800g packs also outperformed small pack sizes with 4% growth, while 250g packs declined by 10%. However, in product areas that are used to complement rather than replace a baby's diet consumers increasingly opted for smaller and more affordable packs in order to save money. In dried baby food, small 25g packs notably saw the strongest performance with retail volume growth of 21% in the year, while 30g and 50g packs also performed well with 8% and 14% growth respectively.

Industry Prospects

Price will continue to be a major consideration for consumers buying baby food in the forecast period, with this benefiting the most affordable pack types. Rigid plastic is thus set to continue to see striking sales growth, gaining share from higher-priced glass in both prepared and "other" baby food. Rigid plastic is expected to see strong new product development in these areas as brands and private label players increasingly seek to compete on price. Thanks to these trends, overall rigid plastic is expected to see a striking 24% retail volume CAGR in the forecast period, while thin wall plastic containers will see 24% CAGR in prepared baby food and "other" plastic jars will see 17% CAGR in "other" baby food.
