Brazil Tourism Report Q3 2015 - New Study Released

Brazil continues to gear up for the 2016 Olympic Games, although the government is beset by ongoing corruption scandals and a slowing economy. We expect the slowing economy to affect mainly domestic tourism, with international tourism continuing to grow strongly .

The Brazil Tourism Report examines the significant long-term potential being offered by the local tourism industry, especially as the country will host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. However, the report also highlights long-term structural weaknesses facing Brazil's tourism market, particularly in the realm of national transport infrastructure and the shortage of hotels across the country. The latter issue indicates long-term development potential but could lead to supply shortages during the major sporting events. The report also analyses the growth and risk management strategies being employed by some of the leading hotel players in the Brazilian tourism sector as they seek to maximise these tremendous growth opportunities.

Brazil's stellar tourism year in 2014, boosted by the World Cup, has been replaced by a more uncertain outlook in 2015. This is largely the result of a slowing economy, which is weighing on domestic and outbound tourism and also acting as a brake on investment into the hotel sector. However, we do not expect this to have a major impact on international arrivals, which will continue to provide the main motor for the Brazilian tourist industry in 2015. Moreover, we note that the weakening currency may encourage more regional tourism, as Brazil is usually one of the most expensive destinations in the region.

We view 2015 as a bridge year between the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, with both arrivals and investment set to pick up strongly in 2016. We expect this to signal renewed growth for the tourism industry, with both tourist arrivals and hotel industry value subsequently set to grow steadily towards the end of our forecast period in 2019.
