Hair care achieved current value growth of 3% in 2014, a performance which was in line with the review period average. Standard shampoos and conditioners were the strongest performers, registering current value growth of 4% and 5%, respectively. Other categories such as colourants and hair loss treatments delivered weaker growth of 1%. It is thought that as consumers are feeling more positive about the economic climate they are returning to salons to have their hair coloured, with the continued trend for a more natural and relaxed look slowing the growth of styling agents, which remained flat in current value terms.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape did not change significantly in 2014. Procter & Gamble retained its leading position in hair care with a value share of 25% and sales of £382 million. This was fairly equally split between its portfolio of top performing hair care brands. Pantene was its best-selling brand, closely followed by Clairol Nice ‘n’ Easy, accounting for respective shares of 23% and 21% of Procter & Gamble’s sales. Its Head & Shoulders, Clairol Herbal Essences and Aussie brands all contributed to an increase in value sales.

Hair care is expected to achieve slow overall value growth of 2% at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period. The category is heavily saturated and while new formats are expected to continue to see some success, consumers will likely substitute products in their hair care routines rather than adding additional ones.
