New Market Report: Wound Care in France

Wound care recorded an appreciable value increase in 2014, although manufacturers were rather disappointed by the disparate performances of its categories and channels. While chemists/pharmacies (with 51% of value sales) still posted an interesting performance in 2014 notably thanks to strong price increases due to the added value of increasingly sophisticated products for feet and blisters and liquid plasters, grocery retailers (the leader in volume but not in value) waned in 2014. The latter channel bore the brunt of strong price erosion and private label encroachment.

Competitive Landscape

With a value share of 36% in 2014, Laboratoires URGO remained the absolute leader in wound care in a concentrated competitive landscape. It maintained its dynamism in terms of innovation, with positive results for the recently launched UrgoStart and Urgo Cicatrices over 2013/14. These two premium products helped to add value to its sticking plasters/adhesive bandages division, as the company widely promoted the improved efficiency of its recent technological advances, notably in removing post-wound scars and being more appropriate for patients suffering from other health complications, such as diabetes and ulcers. Laboratoires URGO also enjoyed growing fortunes on the back of the success story of Urgo Filmogel, the leader in liquid plaster for deep cracks.

Industry Prospects

According to one manufacturer, there is still room for a transfer from chemists/pharmacies to supermarkets/hypermarkets. Nonetheless, brands available in the former channel benefited from one asset: Better consumer loyalty, while brand equity is much weaker in grocery retailers. In supermarkets and hypermarkets, consumers choose the type of wound care they need (blister, burning, liquid plaster, basic etc) thanks to A-brands on the shelves and then often switch to a private label equivalent – if it exists.
