Direct Selling in Brazil - New Market Report

Direct selling continues to post a healthy performance despite high unemployment as it has become the primary source of income for many families or a second job to complement household income. Given the growing unemployment rates in Brazil, the sales force in direct selling started to increase in some companies, which contributed to the growth perceived in the retail value sales growth rate in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

Natura Cosméticos and Avon Cosméticos continue to account for a combined 52% of retail value sales in 2014. Avon faced some difficulties in direct selling with slow growth in retail value sales, reaching 3% in 2014, which resulted in the decline in the company’s share compared to the previous year. Natura also posted growth, at 5% in 2014, although the company also lost retail value share dropping to 30% in 2014 from 32% in the previous year.

Industry Prospects

The most significant challenge to direct selling continues to be the intense competition with other retail formats, such as internet retailing and store-based retailing. Direct sellers have been reinventing their offer through product assortments, merchandising and novelties as they have not been able to innovate in terms of flexibility and versatility. The key question is whether pure direct selling companies will be able to move to a multichannel strategy
