The bird population, for instance, has consistently declined since 2008, and the high up-front costs associated with exotic fish and birds have dissuaded new pet owners from acquiring such pets. Competitive Landscape

In Canada, other pet food is consolidated and continues to be led by three manufacturers Spectrum Brands Inc, Rolf C Hagen Inc and Hartz Canada Inc which together held a 60% retail value share in 2014. The small size of the other pet food category, combined with distribution being primarily through specialised retailers, presents a certain challenge in terms of category entry and development. None of the leading global pet food companies, which maintain a strong presence in dog and cat food, is present in the other pet food category. At the same time, this fractured competitive landscape in other pet food has allowed for private label sales to establish a foothold. However, established brands including other pet food leader Tetra, which is especially prevalent in fish food, Living World, in small mammal food, and Hartz, in bird food and small mammal/reptile food, have continued to enjoy high penetration in the core pet superstores and pet shops channels and through internet retailing. This, combined with low levels of advertising, has led to a relatively stable status quo in terms of competitive positioning.

Overall, volume sales of other pet food are expected to decline by a CAGR of 1% in 2015-2020. This decline in volumes sales will mainly be driven by a fall in the other pet population in Canada. The bird population has declined consistently since 2008 and this trend is expected to continue. At the same time, fish, small mammal and reptile populations are expected to remain stable in the forecast period. While companies will continue to struggle with category maturity and a declining interest in pet birds, value sales will perform slightly better than volume sales as other pet owners will continue to favour more premium products.
