Apparel and footwear specialist retailers experienced sluggish current value growth of 12% in 2014 resulting from a slowdown of economic and consumer expenditure growth. Instability of the exchange rate of the local currency in the second half of 2014 made retailers feel especially vulnerable as a major part of apparel and footwear was imported from abroad. Those retailers that sold apparel and footwear from local production also suffered from currency fluctuations as they used mostly imported raw materials. One of the leading domestic footwear retailers Obuv Rossii responded to increasing prices of import products by opening production of footwear at the end of 2014 as part of its import substitution strategy. The retailer projected to increase the share of domestic production in its retail sales volume to 50%.
