New Market Research Report: Gardening in Argentina

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Fri Aug 07 2015

Gardening, including garden care, gardening equipment, horticulture, pots and planters and other gardening is relatively mature and posted moderate growth of 2% in current value terms in 2014, similar to the rate in 2013, standing at sales of C$4.1 billion. This was slightly lower than the CAGR over the review period in current value terms. On the positive side, the expanding ageing demographic and new trend for urban gardening help drive the sales. The population aged 65 and older grew by around 3% since 2006, far exceeding the growth rate for the total population of typically close to 1% in the past decade. As the baby boomers retire, they spend money on gardening and outdoor living products, according to industry experts. On the negative side, continued weak economic recovery, increasingly busy lifestyles, and a lack of engagement from the younger generation impose limits on the growth of gardening. For areas such as plant protection, regulatory changes that took place over the years also pose great challenges. Additionally, the weather in 2014 was not in favour of growth, with an unusually cold winter, late spring and cool summer which all took their toll on the product sales for gardening and outdoor living products.

Competitive Landscape

In highly fragmented gardening in Canada, Scotts Miracle-Gro Co remained the leading player with a value share of 12% and its main product offerings in garden care. It leads in areas including fertilizer, soil, pest control and herbicides. The regulatory changes in Canada over the review period really put a damper on the growth of certain of the player’s areas, particularly pest control and herbicides, and it even highlights this in its annual report of 2013. As a result, it actively promoted its EcoSense brand to make up for the lost share, in competing with other brands, notably Premier Tech Home & Garden’s Wilson and Green Earth.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, gardening is projected to reach C$4.3 billion in 2019, posting a slight 1% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices. This is marginally better than its corresponding stagnant CAGR performance in the review period. An expanding ageing population, rising interest in urban gardening, gradually improved and resilient economic growth and soft landing of the housing market are all likely to help propel gardening forwards, albeit with no significant increase expected. With the fall of oil prices that started mid-2014 and continued into 2015, there is reason to take a more cautious view of the Canadian economy over the forecast period.
