The coffee trend is thriving in Greece, with Greeks drinking coffee increasingly often and in many different places. Take-away coffee has also become rather popular, given that consumers would rather save both time and money and have their fix on-the-go, on the way to work or when taking a walk in the park. All these are relatively new habits for Greeks, who used to relate having a coffee with going out to socialise. Coffee on-the-go is a comparatively new trend, and has mostly taken place in big cities to date, yet it is expanding rapidly, and is forecast to continue to do so. The trend for coffee was not, however, enough to prevent the overall drop in value sales for cafés/bars in 2014, as the channel saw an 11% decline in current value terms. The positive climate around coffee attracted many new operations nonetheless, with the number of outlets managing to see a 1% increase in 2014, despite the already high number. Transaction volumes also only declined by 1% during 2014, demonstrating a significant shift to cheaper items rather than consumers refraining from visiting cafés/bars.

Competitive Landscape

Mikel Cafe led cafés/bars in 2014, with an overall share of 2% in value terms, which translated into a 58% value share in chained operations. The Mikel Coffee Company chain continued to expand rapidly to new cities and locations throughout 2014, almost doubling its number of outlets from 47 to 87. This relatively new concept has found great acceptance from Greek consumers, as it bases a great deal of its marking on coffee on-the-go and on good prices.

Industry Prospects

The trend favouring coffee, and especially coffee on-the-go, is expected to continue to gather pace in Greece throughout the forecast period 2014-2019. Consumers will be attracted by the low prices of take-away options, whilst maintaining a growing desire for coffee, as coffee blends are being premiumised and coffee-based drinks are continuously expanding in variety. Snacks to accompany coffee, such as bakery products, cookies and pastries, such as donuts, will also continue to find ground for development, along with sales of coffee.
