2014 started and ended positively for herbal/traditional products. Thanks to the postponed settlement of EFSA regulations, the category was spared in 2013 but had to face their impact in 2014. Many players saw 2013 as being the calm before the storm. However, the new regulations caused more fear than damage in 2014 and even encouraged manufacturers to adapt to the regulations with new formulas – for instance, glucosamine with vitamin C or probiotics with vitamin D –, new types of communication, more credible claims and clearer packaging.

Competitive Landscape

With more than 200 small laboratories offering at least one herbal brand and commanding marginal shares, herbal/traditional products has the most fragmented competitive landscape in consumer health. Another particularity of this category is the leadership of two players which are positioned in grocery retailers. Medicated confectionery accounted for a third of value sales of herbal/traditional products in 2014, although specialists do not consider them ‘real’ herbal/traditional products. Therefore, the leaders in medicated confectionery, Procter & Gamble Eurocor and Solinest (the distributor of Ricola in Belgium), were also the leading players in herbal/traditional products, with shares of 10% each in 2014. Procter & Gamble Eurocor’s Vicks umbrella brand is present in many categories, including decongestants, but also medicated confectionery – included in both medicated confectionery and packaged food. Solinest is the distributor of Ricola, the main competitor to Vicks in medicated confectionery. In 2014, both Vicks and Ricola were not particularly dynamic due to the mild autumn and winter.

Industry Prospects
