In 2014, fragrances in Japan grew by 2% in current value terms to exceed sales of •46 billion. In 2013, the category returned to positive growth thanks to economic recovery, with 2014 posting a stronger performance as a result of a number of factors. Firstly, the VAT increase from 5% to 8% implemented in April 2014 had a significant impact on fragrances. Many consumers rushed to make multiple purchases before the VAT hike in order to save money, which contributed to volume growth. In addition, the VAT increase was directly reflected in retail prices after April 2014, thus driving unit price growth.

Competitive Landscape

Fragrances in Japan remained highly fragmented in 2014. "Various distributors" accounted for a 27% value share, with the leading distributor, Bluebell Japan, leading the field. Bluebell Japan has been operating in fragrances since 1954 and the company distributes 25 international fragrance brands, including Bvlgari and Gucci. Chloť by Chloť, also distributed by Bluebell Japan, grew in popularity towards the end of the review period, with its value share rising to 2%. Its feminine and light scent was well received by consumers.
