Domestic manufacturers continued strategic activity regarding expansion of manufacturing and distribution of cider/perry. They benefited from favourable market circumstances which was the plentiful supply of low-cost apples, lowered (since 1 January 2013) excise tax and rising interest of Polish consumers in this product. In particular, the excise tax was set at PLN97 as compared to the previous PLN158, whereas the record apple harvest accounted to 3.5 million tonnes in 2014. The ban on exporting apples to Russia caused a significant surplus of this fruit which resulted in a sharp decline in manufacturers’ sale prices.

Competitive Landscape

Ambra SA strengthened its position as the leading player of cider/perry in Poland in 2014 with 41% total volume share, gaining one percentage point. The company’s leading position is attributable to the intense distribution throughout Poland with contribution of Ambra’s existing logistics and trading contacts. Ambra is a leading distributor of wine in Poland which makes it possible to attach its cider products to an already developed network of supplied wholesalers and retail networks. It is worth stressing that the company placed a clear emphasis on cider and tended to create cider as a leading product in its portfolio.

Industry Prospects

Producers have invested in the technical manufacturing infrastructure in the hope of recording a successful performance over the forecast period. They expect the market to develop as in several markets in Western Europe where the consumption of cider/perry is several levels higher than in Poland. The positive stimulus is guaranteed supply of apples as Poland is one of the largest manufacturers of these fruits in the world. They may also expect a positive political climate for their activity as such ideas supporting the development of domestic agriculture might be supported by the Polish government. The first sign of a favourable approach was lowering excise tax since 2013 from the previous PLN158 to PLN97/100 litres. Moreover, the Ministry of Agriculture continues to apply for total abolition of such a financial burden on cider/perry.
