The share of PET bottles has increased significantly, primarily the PET bottles of three litres, 5.5 litres and 19 litres. Each of these sizes grew by approximately 17-18% in 2012. This growth was connected with the increasing popularity of healthy lifestyles and the consequent preference for the use of bottled water for both drinking and cooking. Another important fact concerning the 19-litre PET bottles is that they are not replacing the bottles of a smaller volume. According to a survey carried out in 2012 in the capital Kyiv, only 12% of people who use bottled water are ready to start using water in 19-litre PET bottles instead of smaller PET bottles. Most customers who buy water in 19-litre PET bottles are those who did not previously use bottled water for cooking.

Industry Prospects

Soft drinks in small-volume packaging are expected to become more popular, especially in two main categories. The first category is new products for children in small-volume packaging, for example, 200ml brick liquid cartons, which are widely used for fruit/vegetable juice. Therefore, this category is expected to grow by 18% over the forecast period. The second category is small glass bottles mostly used for cola carbonates, which is becoming popular among youths.
